A thoroughly absorbing story of a singer-turned-songwriter in New York (a once-in-a-lifetime role for character star Illeana Douglas), from 1958 to the early Seventies. Douglas is brilliant as the central character, and, in focusing on heartache as well as happiness, writer-director Allison Anders' exuberant musical scrapbook becomes a totally involving drama, supposedly based on the life of singer-songwriter Carole King. Great soundtrack, too.
