The hangdog Stephen Rea was born to play life's losers, and they don't come more downtrodden than Irish Eddie. A small-time salesman reduced to muddy fetching and carrying for the local tinker godfather (Richard Harris), Eddie would like his own business but it's a distant dream. When Harris marries a feisty teenage bride only to see her run off with his own nephew (and the dowry), who was Eddie's business assistant, extinction looks likelier than distinction for our dog-eared hero. This is a slow film considering it has a lot of plot, and a dismal one too - but at least it has an upbeat ending.
