Another of Claude Lelouch's epic, continent-spanning love stories. The two central characters are both musicians who have turned to crime and Lelouch plays at some length on their varying attempts to go straight (and the crimes they have to commit to keep going) on their way from France to Canada. Catherine Deneuve is very nearly at her luminous best as the cellist whose abuse at the hands of men has turned her to extortion; Jacques Dutronc is game but less charismatic as Simon (a favourite character name of Lelouch's), the pianist caught between a love of music and a legacy of crime. There's too little chemistry between them, although their fate at the end is nicely ironic.
