Based on a real-life case, this follows the fight by lesbian mother Jody (Valerie Bertinelli) to retain her son after grandmother Nancy (Vanessa Redgrave) wins custody of the child in court. The flashback centres on Jody's initial lax and irresponsible behaviour and her life together with her child and her mother, until she finally gets a job and meets Maggie (Colleen Flynn), who has her own harrowing tale to tell. Gradually Jody realises how attached her mother is to her grandson and how hard she has to battle to win him back. The heroine's thwarted attempts to get the court decision reversed make compelling viewing.
