A crotchety pensioner, Mr Carmody (Joss Ackland), is bundled off against his will to a Cornish hotel in winter where, under the influence of Miss Palmer (Jean Simmons), his grumpiness gradually dissolves and he mellows into an unexpected love affair with her. The two elderly tourists are sensitively and believably portrayed by the stars, with humour injected through cabbie Derek (Ian Crowe) and a small group of generally morose hotel guests. Good panoramas of Cornwall, sympathetic portrayals by all the cast and a tight script combine to keep the viewer interested.
