Ron Rifkin sizzlingly re-creates his 1981 off-Broadway theatre performance as a Jewish Holocaust survivor, now a caustic Manhattan publisher determined to fund a vastly expensive four-volume study of Nazi medical atrocities. His company is in trouble, and his alienated offspring (Tony Goldwyn, Sarah Jessica Parker,Timothy Hutton) want to save it by publishing a trashy novel by Goldwyn's gay lover. Smashing performances and deft direction defy the stage origins of Jon Robin Baitz's adaptation of his own hit stage play, which clearly owes a little to King Lear as it tackles several big issues with sharp wit and penetrating intelligence. Parker starred with Ron Rifkin in the stage show, which the movie's director, Daniel J Sullivan, also directed.
