This crime drama was evidently the pilot for a TV series ­ and had potential. However, since it came rather near the bone for Tinseltown tastes, it was probably doomed to fail. Never mind, as a stand-alone story, it's not at all bad. TV movie stalwart Edward James Olmos takes the lead as Stan Navarro Sr, an ex-LAPD cop who heads up a private detective agency called LA Confidential. Their cases include that of a young girl who has an affair with a well-known film director, becomes pregnant and is dumped. It's down to Stan and his team to 'handle' the situation. The telefilm is smartly made, with some well-rounded characters and good work from an ensemble cast that includes Charlize Theron.
