The actor and producer is regrettably distinguished as the one cast member in the British quartet in Iris who was not nominated for an Oscar.
Judi Dench and Kate Winslet were nominated for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress while Jim Broadbent won the award for his supporting role as Iris Murdoch's husband.
Bonneville played the young John Bayely, opposite Winslet, and missed out on the Oscars - although he was nominated for a BAFTA for best supporting actor.
He began his career as a theatrical producer and worked on such plays as Beautiful Thing and Half Time in London's West End.
Onstage appearances include The Devil's Disciple, School for Scandal, Juno and the Paycock, School for Wives, Entertaining Strangers and Yerma.
After many years with the Royal Shakespeare Company, Hugh side-stepped into TV, in series such as Married For life, Breakout and The Cazalets.
Bonneville made his feature film debut in 1994 as Schiller in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and followed that with the Bond movie Tomorrow Never Dies.
He played the supporting role of Bernie in Notting Hill, Mr Rushworth in Mansfield Park and Louis in the camp comedy drama Blow Dry.
Enjoying a subsequent TV career in popular series such as Armadillo and Tipping The Velvet, he also returned to the big screen for Emperor's New Clothes and Asylum.
