This crescendo of violence from Chow Yun-Fat - more relaxed than in his previous Hollywood outing - will pass the time for his fans, and co-stars then-hot young American actor Mark Wahlberg. The usual plot about Chinatown ganglords, this does have ambivalent characters - few of its cops escape the taint of corruption - as well as a particular disregard for life: fleeing crooks mow down bystanders in their cars to block pursuing cops. But, though James Foley's hard-working direction is punchier than usual, it all boils down to much of the same in the end; personally we prefer Jackie Chan and his sense of humour.
