Pre-empting the first real artificial heart transplant operation that took place in 1983, this Canadian medical drama tells the story of a doctor (Donald Sutherland) who causes controversy within his hospital when he uses inventor Jeff Goldblum's artificial heart in a patient. The film focuses first on the operation then on how the patient, emotively portrayed by Mare Winningham, deals with not only being, in her eyes, now only 'half-human', but also the media's frenzied attention. The performances, especially Sutherland's, make this powerfully written human drama well worth a look.
