After the blips of A Life Less Ordinary and The Beach, director Danny Boyle is back on top form with this scalding sideshoot of the old Danny DeVito comedy Tin Men. Here it's Timothy Spall, on top form as a sleazy supersalesman who lives for selling. In a barnstorming performance, Spall also manages to reveal the human being behind the monster as he tutors a new apprentice (Michael Begley) in the art of getting the housewife's signature on the dotted line. Spall's really the whole show, although a perceptive screenplay by Jim Cartwright, who wrote Little Voice, brings out all the agony and esctasy of selling vacuum cleaners.
