The 2001 comedy, which grossed around £80m in America, was nominated for two Golden Globe awards.
Born to a Sicilian mother and Yugoslavian electrician father, Luketic graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne.
Unashamedly commercial, he was just 15 when he won the best film award at the ATOM Film Festival and announced he would make it in Hollywood by the age of 30.
He first attracted attention in America with the comedy short Titsiana Booberini before taking the helm of Legally Blonde - at 29 years old.
In 2004, he directed the romantic comedy Win A Date With Tad Hamilton, starring Kate Bosworth and Topher Grace.
Recent work includes the comedy Monster-in-Law which saw Jane Fonda return to the big screen after a 15 year break to team up with Jennifer Lopez.
Upcoming projects include the big screen version of the celebrated American soap, Dallas.
