Hard-assed detective Mitch (De Niro) is working undercover finding out just what the really bad guys are up to, when in blunders loudmouth rookie patrolman Tray (Murphy), who hits the radio for back-up.
A news channel scanning the cop frequency find out what's going on and moibilise the news chopper.
The bad guys are scared off, leaving Mitch with the lens in the face. He loses his temper and shoots the camera.
So the news company threatens to sue unless they let a camera team follow Mitch to produce a cop reality show.
Mitch hates cameras almost as much as he hates Tray, who he is forced to team up with.
This is a neat and funny twist on the standard buddy film.
Also thrown into the mix is a great cameo from William Shatner (remember TJ Hooker?) and a really cute police dog.
Any attempt at weighty satire is quickly lost amid the good-natured silliness of it all.
Well worth a watch.
