Probably Martin Ritt's most consistently underrated film - a grippingly dramatic story of unrest and sabotage in the grim Pennsylvania coal mines during the second half of the 19th century. The claustrophobic atmosphere of oppression and poverty is vividly caught, and the inner feelings of the major characters ripped gut-raw, with Richard Harris and Sean Connery each giving one of their strongest and most moving performances.
