This rugged western, which was described by one American reviewer as `almost a love story', it features a fine role for Vera Miles, one of Hitchcock's favourite actresses, as a much put-upon wife who forsakes her sheriff husband to flee to Mexico with a wanted outlaw. Anderson has some powerful moments as the sheriff, and so does the redoubtable Clu Gulager as his abnoxiously cocky sidekick.
