Many of Britain's Fifties comedy stars (Cecil Parker, Stanley Holloway, Eric Barker, Wilfrid Hyde White, Kathleen Harrison, Lance Percival, John le Mesurier, Bill Owen) feature in the supporting cast of this RAF romp. A pity, then, that the film isn't terribly good. It stars Alfred Lynch as a Cockney wide boy who joins the wartime RAF with the intention of fleecing his fellow erks. His sidekick is Sean Connery as a rather slow-witted gipsy. Indeed, it's this odd piece of casting that is the main reason for watching the film today. It's difficult to imagine a dull-witted Connery, but with a twinkle in his eye, he gives the role a lot of charm. Spot the young Barbara Windsor as a barmaid. 35 years later, at the Queen Vic, her career had come full circle!
