Director Jud Taylor and scriptwriter Tom S Cook score with this true life drama by concentrating on the tragic personal life and motivation of the policeman who tracked down the notorious New York multiple killer `Son of Sam', rather than playing up the sensational murders and mindless violence. In the confident hands of Martin Sheen, Officer Ed Zigo emerges as a totally believable character, whose unrestrained enthusiasm and personal heartbreak are movingly portrayed. There is also an excellent cameo from Joe Spinell, as an alcoholic ex-cop. The real Ed Zigo - now off the force - has a small acting role and was technical advisor. Another former detective involved is producer Sonny Grosso, who helped crack the `French Connection' case.
