The Shoes of the Fisherman

Epic drama about a Russian bishop who becomes Pope, starring Anthony Quinn, Laurence Olivier and Oskar Werner.

Impressive, strikingly coloured epic about a fighting Russian bishop. This was not popular with the critics when it first appeared, even though Quinn was tipped at the time for an Oscar. But it has several moving scenes, beautiful photography by Erwin Hillier and an eye-catching performance by Leo McKern. It also uncannily predicted the emergence of a Pope from Eastern Europe.
