Villain Charles Laughton and hero Robert Newton had co-starred the previous year, in Vessel of Wrath, a Laughton role which Newton himself would play years later in The Beachcomber. And his Long John Silver doubtless owed something to Laughton's leering Captain Kidd. An array of British character actors is on hand to help them with full-bloodied performances in this swaggering yarn. The results are a trifle lurid, but the film has plenty of thrills and, even as Hitchcock wrapped it up, Laughton and Maureen O'Hara were on their way to Hollywood to co-star in the classic The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
