A strong performance by Christopher Lee gives this macabre thriller a distinct lift. It also marks one of the rare latter-day appearances of Evelyn Laye, one of the top British musical comedy stars of the Twenties and Thirties. Here she's caught up in a plot about vampire-like murders at a Grand Guignol Paris theatre. Although the story loses some momentum after a vivid beginning, such time-honoured devices as cobwebs drifting across stone walls, darkly cloaked figures flitting towards their victims, secret panels and grisly deaths will keep fans of Sixties horror films happy.
