... And this is a VERY loose-limbed comedy of mayhem which its star, Clint Eastwood, intends no one to take seriously. His co-star, an orang-utan called Clyde, steals practically every scene, while Ruth Gordon, as Clint's loopy Ma, pinches many of the rest. It's so like an old biker movie of the Sixties, though, that you practically expect Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper (or maybe even Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello) to wander in at any minute. The story and the characters are really too silly even by the standards of this kind of romp, and the film's disparate elements hardly ever begin to gel. It still pulled 'em in at the box-office, though, and Eastwood's personal share of the profits was said to be more than $15million. No wonder he made a sequel, Any Which Way You Can.
