Archie Rice, seedy seaside entertainer, a failure in his career and as a man, is another in the memorable gallery of dramatic creations that only a Laurence Olivier could have brought so compellingly to life. He repeats his stage triumph in John Osborne's play alongside a terrific cast including his wife, Joan Plowright, plus Roger Livesey, Brenda de Banzie, Alan Bates, Shirley Ann Field, Albert Finney, Thora Hird and Daniel Massey. The film itself is less successful than the sum of its cast, but Olivier's grotesque smile and dead eyes remain vivid in the memory.
