Another of Peter Finch's towering performances, this time as a German industrialist, determined to preserve his mid-Thirties' empire at all costs. The costs may include marriage to the English girl (Hildegarde Neil, a shade too dispassionate) who is his strong right arm, and the possible dispatch of her worthless brother (Michael York) for whom she nurses an incestuous desire. Based on a novel by Graham Greene, this is stern and uncompromising stuff. But Michael Hordern contributes an amusing cameo as a penniless, seedy reporter, and Michael York turned in his best screen work to date.
