As the evil Lord Manderstoke, James Mason contributes another of the villainous cad parts that made his name in the British cinema in this rip-snorting costume melodrama set in 1870s England. With the advantage of a good script adapted from Michael Sadleir's novel, expert direction by the eminent Anthony Asquith and a top cast that also includes Stewart Granger, Jean Kent and Phyllis Calvert, it's surprisingly distinguished.
