Roman Polanski's first feature film conjures up an atmosphere charged with tension, and a feeling of resentment and bitterness smouldering beneath the surface of a stale marriage - often without a word being said. The spareness of the dialogue and the unrelenting attention of Jerzy Lipman's excellent black-and-white camerawork grips our minds to the triangle being played out on board a small yacht in the Polish lake district. The film won the Critics' Prize at the Venice Film Festival and was also nominated for an Academy Award.
