Agatha Christie has continued down the decades to be an irresistible magnet for film-makers with star casts in mind, even if the essence of the lady continues to elude many of them. Donald Sutherland and Michael Elphick (although the latter is uncomfortable with a Scottish accent) lend their distinctly offbeat presences to this tale of murder in Fifties' Devon. Faye Dunaway and Sarah Miles are seen to less advantage, but sex appeal is so piquantly provided by Phoebe Nicholls and Cassie Stuart that one is rather sorry to see one of them get bumped off in the course of the plot. Although Dave Brubeck's obtrusive jazz score seems to belong to some other movie, Billy Williams conjures up some atmospheric Eastman Colour photography on location in Dartmouth.
