Sterling Hayden (actually billed on screen as Stirling) not only made his film debut in this rambling saga of the fairly deep South, but married the star, lovely Madeleine Carroll (they were divorced in 1946). Shimmering colour photography by Bert Glennon and William V Skall often takes your attention away from the indifferent material with which the stars have to work.
