A magnificent screen entertainment carved for MGM by top writers Sonya Levien and John Meehan from the novel by Marcia Davenport. Its immaculately-plotted story carries us through years of industrial and family strife. And the Oscar-winning Greer Garson is in her best acting form as the shy Irish girl who goes to work for an iron-rich Pennsylvania family against the wishes of her father. Giving her good support, in a marvellous cast, are Dan Duryea, slimily superior as one of her employer's sons and, as the other, a young man classed at the time as an up-and-coming star: Gregory Peck. Even the hardest hearts should be warned to keep a handkerchief by for the ending - one of the most moving movie scenes on record.
