The movie equivalent of a good, long read, this is an epic drama, based on fact, about a shipload of German-Jewish refugees in 1939 vainly seeking a safe haven. The all-star cast includes Orson Welles as a wily Cuban industrialist, Faye Dunaway, Max Von Sydow (whose sterling performance holds the disparate dramas together), Oskar Werner, James Mason, Malcolm McDowell and Ben Gazzara. Director Stuart Rosenberg keeps his huge cast and sprawling narrative steadily under control.
