Zulu

The legendary stand by little more than 100 British troops defending a garrison against a force of 4,000-odd Zulu warriors at Rorke's Drift is superbly realised in director Cy Endfield's epic historical adventure. A young Michael Caine delivers an astoundingly assured performance and the relentless action packs a visceral punch.

Zulu

This is that rarity in films - an all-action, no-frills, straightforward re-creation of an heroic moment in history.

On this occasion, the action concerns the Zulu wars in South Africa and, in particular, the electrifying Battle of Rorke's Drift in 1879.

This is where little more than 100 men of the South Wales Borderers made a staggeringly brave stand against 4000 yelling Zulu warriors, who had just massacred a force of over 1,000 British troops.

It is in the supporting roles that the film finds its own strength. James Booth, as the malingering Private Hook, Nigel Green, as the colour-sergeant, Ivor Emmanuel (in his only film appearance) and Kerry Jordan (the camp cook) all give exemplary service.

And then-newcomer Michael Caine is so impressive it's amazing he wasn't snapped up for more star roles long before The Ipcress File two years later.

The last few scenes, as rank after rank of the last defenders pour leaden defiance at the Zulus from a few yards' range, are pulsatingly thrilling.

This film is a template on which numerous future action/war movies are based, a gallant underdog besieged by a seemingly insermountable foe. The underdogs in this case a small band of British soldiers(led by debutant Michael Caine) surrounded by a horde of 4000 zulu warriors hellbent on their demise. The action is tense with long gaps in the action as the soldiers wait for each wave of attack, and the two leads bicker constantly about command. An absolute classic.

Zulu has to go down as an all-time classic. With many great performances, it brilliantly portrays the courage of those men who fought in the battle, whether black or white. A film that I first saw at a young age, it sparked my deep interest in the Zulu War.
