Costumes and settings are on a spectacular scale in this third screen adaptation of a romantic fol-de-rol that had previously seen service as a vehicle for both Gloria Swanson and Pauline Frederick. This time it's Claudette Colbert in the title role. Then at her physical and acting peaks, Colbert lends sincerity and scintillation to the tempestuous French entertainer who falls in love with married lothario Herbert Marshall. Bert Lahr (soon to win immortality as the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz), Helen Westley and Constance Collier are all impressive in supporting roles.
