A modern-day Western on the familiar theme of one man against the odds, given a mighty boost by Tommy Lee Jones as the one man, offering a superb performance as the Vietnam veteran, now peace-loving rancher, who's finally pushed too far. The clean, direct teleplay puts the issues squarely before the viewer and keeps them there. There are few sideline distractions here, as the mighty US Defense Department, representing the local air force base, tries to buy out local ranchers for a purpose it won't divulge. Jones and his father (Ben Johnson) refuse to sell, and it takes Western-style action to resolve the story. Dee Wallace Stone also shines as the hero's loving wife, but this is Jones' film.
