Steely-eyed Steve McQueen gives a memorably glowering performance as the ex-con mastermind behind a ruthlessly efficient bank heist, in Sam Peckinpah's typically violent crime caper. Although Ali MacGraw's vacuous performance as McQueen's wife is a bit of a liability, there are enough colourful characters in the supporting cast to compensate. Particularly good are Al Lettieri as a treacherous hit-man and Bo Hopkins as his trigger-happy apprentice. Remade in 1994, starring Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger.
