This massive, action-filled epic about General Gordon is filled with too much stuffy waffle in its first half. Still, Charlton Heston lends some presence (and a fair English accent) to the role of the stubborn Gordon, Ralph Richardson is excellent as cynical Prime Minister Gladstone and Laurence Olivier is in frighteningly ferocious form as the 'mad' Mahdi who opposes him in the Sudanese deserts of 1883.
