This episodic account of the adventures of a Russian musician (Robin Williams) who defects to America in the middle of Bloomingdale's department store has some amusing moments but rather lacks charm. And it seems (no doubt deliberately on the part of director Paul Mazursky) that none of the people Vladimir comes into contact with is actually American. His lawyer is Cuban, his doctor Indian, his girlfriend Italian and so forth. This is partly because he lives in a ghetto district, although you would have thought that there would be sufficient novelty value in a Russian saxophonist to get him showbiz dates. Mazursky himself helped to write the script, which is peppered with sardonically amusing lines and situations. Interesting fare, though you may find it hard to get involved.
