Well-staged version of Thornton Wilder's famous comedy play, which was later made into the smash-hit Broadway and film musical 'Hello Dolly! ' Shirley Booth is nearer the right age for the part than was Barbra Streisand, and Paul Ford is in fine, spluttering form in the part played by Walter Matthau in the later film. Rich in supporting talent (Anthony Perkins and Shirley MacLaine are in it too) the film has many rewarding moments - not least of which is the sight of a very young Robert Morse masquerading as an elderly lady. This was Morse's first film and, surprisingly, his talent went unnoticed. He went back to the stage, and it was another five years before he returned as a star in his next film `Honeymoon Hotel'. Roistering fun, only slightly spoiled by the casting of the director's wife in a key supporting role.
