Richard Harris broke through to big-time stardom in Lindsay Anderson's brutally gritty study of a coal-miner who becomes a professional rugby player. A highpoint of the early Sixties British 'kitchen sink' movement, it gave Rachel Roberts an eye-catching role as the landlady who becomes his lover and Alan Badel an on best best movie parts as an unscrupulous businessman. Glenda Jackson makes her screen debut as one of the people singing around a piano. Watch out for William Hartnell, Leonard Rossiter and Arthur Lowe too.
