George Roy Hill (he went on to direct Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Sting) brought a deftness of touch to Lillian Hellman's adaptation of her own play. Dean Martin is on top form as the gadabout who comes home to spinster sisters Geraldine Page and Wendy Hiller with a child bride.
