An odd and often ghoulish film from British filmmaker Peter Greenaway. Two handsome brothers grieve for the loss of their wives in a bizarre car crash involving an escaped swan, and become obsessed with studying the origins of life and the process of decay at a European zoo. Frequently difficult to watch, this film displays a certain visual flourish, luminous photography from regular Greenaway collaborator Sacha Vierny and a captivating score by Michael Nyman. But it also reveals Greenaway, like fellow Briton Ken Russell, with a head full of shaggy-dog stories rather than a sensible script with meaningful dialogue. This one barely engages its audience's sympathies and often seems all dressed up with nowhere to go. Unsurprisingly for a Greenaway film, it contains scenes of full frontal nudity.
