This enjoyable little trifle (except for those squeamish about things happening to animals) finds newly qualified vet Simon Ward coming to work at a Yorkshire practice in the Thirties, where he very soon learns the facts of country life. Acting honours are wholly stolen by Anthony Hopkins, as Ward's senior partner, who is exactly as one would imagine a country doctor or vet to be. Jiggling his pipe noisily between his teeth, brushing recalcitrant hair away from his eyes, or trying desperately to remember to do his accounts, Hopkins makes this inconsequential film entirely his own.
