A curiosity about the world of professional bodybuilders, and a film in which Arnold Schwarzenegger made his first impact. You might think at times Bob Rafelson's movie is making a serious statement - at least until a zany free-for-all finale that has a gang of Mr Universe contestants running amok on the tops of buses in the city freeway. Anyway, Rafelson's film, whether it has something to say or not, is curiously immature and undisciplined for the man who made Five Easy Pieces and, much later, Black Widow. Little bits of it work well on their own levels, but never look like falling together into a cohesive whole. Jeff Bridges is colourless in the central role, and Sally Field gives little hint of Oscar-winning glories soon to come. As a diversion, though, it fills the bill.
