Somewhere, some time, there's a great little film waiting to be made about the world of the local newspaper. In the meantime this appealing, entertaining but flawed film from director Joan Micklin Silver will do nicely. Its only faults are that its major characters are rather too unpleasant for comfort, and that it dwells too much on their private lives rather than on the private life of the Back Bay Mainline, the paper for which they work. Inside the office, Silver's film springs to life: all the best moments are here, especially the nut who breaks in and starts breaking up the place in the cause of creative art. And there's some beautiful ensemble acting from the then-little-known cast: John Heard, Lindsay Crouse, Jeff Goldblum, Jill Eikenberry and Bruno Kirby among them. The familiar features of Michael J Pollard are very funny in the opening sequence of the film.
