As battle-of-the-sexes comedies go, this is only a little above the average at base, but writer/director Jerry Belson gets such crackerjack performances from Michael Caine, Sally Field, Steve Guttenberg and Peter Boyle that his film is a constant pleasure to be with. Caine plays a succesful writer with a weakness for women who systematically take him to the cleaners. Once the despair of his lawyer (Boyle), Caine now has a sign on the gates of his mansion banning women. Then along comes failed painter Sally Field and, tied up to her during a robbery, Caine soon gets that mating urge again. The film is full of chuckles, and a few big laughs too, such as when Caine tells Boyle that he's `getting rid of all the parasites in my life.' `You mean,' gasps Boyle, `that you're firing me? ' Curiosity note: model/actress Iman could be the first person ever to achieve star billing on the strength of two fleeting appearances and no lines.
