The title refers to the tombstones of US soldiers buried at Arlington Cemetery in this impressively-cast but very slightly dull and strangely uninvolving film about a couple of unusually human sergeant-majors and their youthful charges at the Arlington base.

There are good portrayals from all the older players, particularly Anjelica Huston (in a rare sympathetic role) and Lonette McKee, and from the much younger Mary Stuart Masterson, whose real-life parents play her family in the film.

The central weakness is an uncharismatic performance from D B Sweeney in the film's pivotal role of young soldier Jackie Willow.

It's not bad, with the odd effective emotional moment, but hardly the last word on any of the varying genres it touches.
