Director J Lee Thompson has taken the old, much-filmed adventure classic and turned it into Raiders of the Lost Mines. H Rider Haggard it isn't, but it is fast, furious and fun, right down to the music: every time hero Richard Chamberlain swings into action, the theme tune trumpets forth. And, in Sharon Stone, whose previous roles had been strictly decorative, it has a heroine with a zany sense of humour and a willingness to give it all she's got. From the moment Chamberlain's Quatermain leads his African adventurers into a market-place and says 'Here we are in beautiful downtown Tongola', we know that this is strictly spoofland. The plot moves rapidly from the incredible to the impossible, with poor Bernard Archard whipped unmercifully for the secret of the mines by Herbert Lom and John Rhys Davies who have clearly slipped in from a Pink Panther film and an Indiana Jones adventure respectively. Ms Stone's shorts shrink progressively along with the plot.
