Both a road movie and a battle between good and evil, The Hitcher is a real nailbiter. A psycho killer, Ryder (Rutger Hauer), who murders the drivers from whom he hitches lifts, seems to decide that his latest good Samaritan, teenager Jim (C Thomas Howell), is the man to end his torment. 'Stop me,' he grates, with a knife to Jim's cheek. When Jim's answer is to propel Ryder from the car, his nightmare begins. Ryder continues to kill more helpless motorists, crimes for which Jim is blamed and the chase begins as he, along with diner girl Jennifer Jason Leigh, run from both the cops and Ryder. An impressive and chilling film.
