A comedy that proves that ace director Martin Scorsese is not at his best in lighter mood. The idea is great: cuddly Griffin Dunne, a taller version of Dudley Moore, goes chasing after a girl downtown and lurches from disaster after disaster in a series of events that somehow contrive to interlock. The chill and still of the early hours on deserted city streets seems to seep into the bones of the plot, though, which staggers on in staccato fashion, amusing us with its developments (Cheech and Chong are actually funny! ) but muffling them in Scorsese's execution. Still, it's a lovely all-star cast and the nighttime colour camerawork is crystal-clear.
