Alan Alda wrote, directed and stars in this swipe at films and film-making. He's the writer of a serious book about the American Revolution, which is to be filmed. Screenwriter Bob Hoskins wants to liven it up; and temperamental stars Michael Caine and Michelle Pfeiffer cause their own problems. The plot meanders far too much but the stars just about hold the film together and it remains a witty tale with some genuinely funny moments. Lillian Gish is wonderful in a supporting role.
