Alan Parker's dazzling thriller has bags of style and it flaunts it too. There are lots of clues along the way as to what it's all about, amid a welter of blood and voodoo, but they may not be enough unless you have your wits about you. Mickey Rourke gives his best performance as a seedy, struggling 1955 private eye. Summoned by the mysterious Louis Cyphre (smoothly played by Robert De Niro), he is commanded to find an obscure crooner, Johnny Favorite, who vanished in 1943 after being injured in the war.
