The great Klaus Maria Brandauer hasn't quite had the roles he deserves in Hollywood; here he plays a Russian emigré ex-boxer who was denied a chance of world glory in the Soviet Union because he was Jewish. Now, in America, he trains boxers for a Golden Gloves side to fight a Russian team managed by his own ex-manager. There are no surprises in this film, but it will please Rocky fans, if not dialogue purists, who will moan about the number of cliched lines and situations. The boxing sequences are smartly staged, and Brandauer is always worth watching, as he bobs and weaves around the worst the script can throw at him.
